What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia (pronounced fy-bro-my-AL-ja) is a common and complex chronic pain disorder that affects people physically, mentally and socially. Fibromyalgia is a syndrome rather than a disease. Unlike a disease, which is a medical condition with a specific cause or causes and recognizable signs and symptoms, a syndrome is a collection of signs, symptoms, and medical problems that tend to occur together but are not related to a specific, identifiable cause.

Fibromyalgia, which has also been referred to as fibromyalgia syndrome, fibromyositis and fibrositis, is characterized by chronic widespread pain, multiple tender points, abnormal pain processing, sleep disturbances, fatigue and often psychological distress. For those with severe symptoms, fibromyalgia can be extremely debilitating and interfere with basic daily activities.

Whether you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia or suffer from its symptoms, or have a family member or friend with the disorder, this section is designed to provide you with a better understanding of this chronic pain disorder that affects millions of people worldwide.

More Info
FIBROMYALGIA AWARENESS DAY!!!! is MAY 12, 2011

New York Fibromyalgia Association, Inc. is calling it "500 for Fibro"

We need 500 members signed up by May 12th - by doing this, TD Bank will make a donation of 10% to our cause when anyone who already has an account or anyone opens a new account requests to be added onto the "AFFINTIY PLAN" under "New York Fibromyalgia Association, Inc." This does not in any way affect YOUR account. It only helps the cause.
Please join us by signing up online through facebook or by coming to our meetings if you or someone you know has this painful chronic syndrome called FIBROMYALGIA. You do NOT have to be local in order to help out. You do NOT have to be on facebook to sign up either. To Avoid Facebook (as I know some people will want) & (knowing TD Bank is only on the East Coast), you can sign up by emailing a reply (not "reply all" please) to me with the phrase "PLEASE SIGN ME UP"  (be sure to sign your name as you would like it to appear on the
www.NYFibroAssoc.com website.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Brooklyn Woman Makes Fibromyalgia Visible

Brooklyn Woman Makes Fibromyalgia Visible

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—(15 April 2010)—After being diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2003, Kris Corleone from Brooklyn looked for a local support group as a way to meet others with fibromyalgia. When she couldn’t find anything in the New York City area she started her own group, and this year plans to “Make Fibromyalgia Visible” as part of National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. Corleone understands the limitations that come with having fibromyalgia, which can include chronic pain, fatigue, and even cognitive difficulties. That’s why with the help of two of her friends she has reached out to other people in her borough to form a support group called New York Fibromyalgia Support Group. The group plans to spread the word about fibromyalgia and reach out to others living with it in New York. She has created a Blog (http://fibrobites.blogspot.com/), Facebook group, and is working on a Web site. “People come to me asking about fibromyalgia,” said Corleone. “So there is definitely a need to build awareness.”

Support Group Location

We have found a location to hold our Support Group. We find only one issue. There is a cost for the location. Although it is the "cheapest" location we have come to find over the months, it is a nice place in a good neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Please sign up on Facebook so we can have an idea of how many people will be attending. This will give us an idea of when we can hold the first meeting.
Any questions, feel free to comment here or email us at nyfsg@yahoo.com.
Thank you!

P.S. Group will be a Tuesday from 7-9pm once a month to start.

Dear Family and Friends,
I again am accepting the challenge to raise funds to support the National Fibromyalgia Association by participating in the Third Inaugural Walk of FAME 5K/10K walk/run, located at the Block at Orange in Orange, CA. Please help support me in this important project by contributi...ng generously. ...

Whatever you can give will help - it all adds up! I greatly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress in the "virtual walk".

Sincerely,
Kris Corleone
This year I have created a team that you can join to help me.

A little information: Fibromyalgia Awareness Day — May 2010

Each May, countless people around the world take part in Fibromyalgia Awareness Day activities. Officially observed on May 12, Awareness Day is designed to increase awareness and understanding of fibromyalgia – a chronic pain disorder that affects 3 – 5 percent of the world population.

This year’s campaign,“Make Fibromyalgia Visible,” is aimed at bringing hope to this often isolated and misunderstood patient population through improved public knowledge of this chronic pain disorder.

Walk of FAME is celebrating its third year as the National Fibromyalgia Association’s fundraising awareness walk. The 2010 flagship event is scheduled for Saturday, May 15 in Orange County, Calif. There will be a number of additional walks in communities across the country and around the world.

Please help support this GREAT cause. There are so many of us out there who suffer from this dibilitating syndrome and there is not enough awareness out there.

Hello everyone! I started this blog to keep in touch. Please feel free to comment while we are in the process of getting our support group together. We have been looking for a location in the Brooklyn area but have been unsuccessful as of yet. If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to let us know.
Thank you for being patient.
